A Song for Insomniacs and Record Players
The sun returns to show
It re-opened the hole
In your throat
You thought healed over.
You wake up wheezing—
Lit through. Corpus
Freezing. At night
As you lay flattened-out
Taken for dead,
The shoveled sand falling
And filling your eyes—
Your mind unweaving itself
into shreds—the spiders
made brand-new worlds
between the trees, diaphanous
webs across the doorframe.
It all happens inside the sky—
And there is no there where
It begins—only that it
Elevates into spheres,
And the air thins as it rises.
The day is here and longs
To speak but can’t
Since light let the dark in.
The words are there—
Running clear in the mind
Like a drawn-out line
From north to south.
It was lit from within and
The web fluttered in the slight wind
Was all you wanted to say.
But it’s the hole you see—
No doubt
when you open your mouth
And the night leaks out.
