Spring Vista #1

A bird starts–at a window
where you are;
vines in mid-climb,
a spiral further
up the wires.

At sea level,
the only story
is transitory–
white ibis in the grass,
or another,
little blue heron
in the leaves.

What gives
way is everything–
and whatever
keeps you,
stories up
above the street–
is a certain kind
of weightlessness,
like you weren’t even here.

Water rises,
and the wind
blows through the clouds.
We are separate–you and me–
a spate of swallow-tails,
suddenly here and there–
unseen and innate,
on a flight path out to sea.

Strange Harbor #1

It’s the third day
of spring, and fall
is all over
it–-the wind

across the water
and in the trees,
blowing for all
it's worth.

The wind is nothing
save what it moves–-
cities subsumed
beneath wave after wave.

On a spring day, a wall of water
fades away, into
what it leaves behind–-
anything that got

away, could, and what
you’re left with,
worthless, what the sea
couldn’t drag away, lost

love–-part of being alive:
a dream
of dead people
for the rest of your life.

Verve.
